9 Home Security Tips
Did you know that every 13 seconds a home intrusion is committed, and only 17% of homes have the proper home security systems. You may live in a very safe neighbor but there is no downside to being too prepared. Here are some tips to help you protect your home.
- Hide Spare Keys
This is a pretty simple tip that most people ignore. I would recommend not having spare keys outside your house at all but if you’re the type of person who constantly forgets their house keys, don’t leave the spare ones under the doormat or in the mailbox; find a spot in your garage or your backyard where no one would think to look.
- Change Locks
If you misplace your keys make sure you change the locks. You don’t know who has them now so you’re best off changing them to be safe. Also change the locks if you move into a new house. You don’t know who previously owned the house so don’t trust them.
- Porch Lights
Get motion sensored lights for your porch. This makes potential burglars more visible to you, your neighbors and police who might be driving by. No burglar feels comfortable committing a crime when easily visible.
- Lock Windows and get Blinds to Hide Valuables
Most people remember to lock their doors at night but often forget about the windows. Not only should you make sure they are locked, close the blinds so that your valuables are hidden. You don’t want to leave your plasma screen, your new sofa and whatever else you have in plain sight.
- Install Alarm System
This is one of the best ways to protect your home. Home alarm systems immediately inform authorities and homeowners of potential dangers. From a burglar standpoint (not saying I am one), just the sight of an alarm system would prevent them from attempting robbery. Hearing the alarm go off would make the burglar head for the hills.
- Get to Know your Neighbors
It can’t hurt to make a trustworthy friend. Talk to your neighbors and ensure that you have their back and they have yours. They could be helpful if you’re asleep or out of the house and they see something suspicious going on.
- Talk with Local Police
If you are going on vacation or a weekend getaway and are afraid of a robbery feelfree to talk to the local police and tell them to check up on your house once or twice a night. They would be more than happy to help out.
- Give the Appearance that your House is Occupied
If you are going to be out of the house for a while, make it seem like you are still there. Leave the lights or the radio on or put them on a timer to save a little bit of electricity.
- Don’t Advertise Vacation
I know in this day and age, everyone wants to post what they are doing on social media, especially when they are on vacation. Try to refrain from doing that because it will give away that you will not be home for a while, giving potential burglars the chance to break into your home. Take all the pictures you want on vacation but don’t post them until you return from the trip.
