Dangers of Texting and Driving

Image
1 out of 4 car accidents are caused by texting and driving   Before the smartphone, drunk driving accidents were the leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. In recent years, an average of 2,700 teenagers were killed as a result of drunk driving. What is more scary is that in recent years, over 3,000 teenagers and young adults die each year from distracted driving. That is roughly eight people every day.        It isn’t just teenagers who are the ones texting. According to a survey conducted by AT&T, 49% of American adult drivers admitted they text and drive and 90% of those admit it’s dangerous. So why do we do it? Some say it’s because we are addicted to our phones, experts say the alerts on our phones send a signal to the brain that makes us feel happy. Either way, we have to stop this epidemic. Here are some of my suggestions: Turn off your phone or throw it in the back seat Put phone on "do not disturb" Have a pa...

Local Charity Spotlight: Family Promise of Bergen County

Image
Most of the time, charities don’t get the love and respect they deserve for all the hard work they do for making the community better. Even if only 15 people read my blog, I still feel I should give these guys a shoutout for everything they have done for Bergen County families.      Family Promise, based out of Ridgewood, NJ, is the only organization in Bergen County that provides shelter and support to working families who become homeless. Over the years they have provided shelter for thousands of children and adults by setting the families up in apartments while they learn how to become self-sufficient. Family Promise of Bergen County (FPBC) teaches these families management skills and how to live on their own and be independent again.       Established in 1986, FPBC (formerly known as Interreligious Fellowship for the Homeless) has served thousands of homeless, hungry and needy people...

History of St. Patrick's Day

Image
I was always curious what the history behind St. Patty’s Day was. I knew it was a day people wore green, got drunk and celebrated the Irish heritage, even if they weren’t Irish but I never knew what the meaning behind the celebration was. So I looked it up, did some Wikipedia research and found out the true meaning of St. Patrick’s Day. Continue reading if you are interested.   At age 16, Patrick was kidnapped and was forced to work as a sheppard. During this time, he “found God” who told him to escape and become a priest. When he returned home to Ireland, he brought the religion of Christianity with him. The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day started in the early 17th century. The holiday was  one of the few days of the year where it wasn’t frowned upon by the Catholic church to eat big meals and drink alcohol, which encouraged today’s tradition of drinking more than a lot of alcohol. This celebration takes place on March 17th yearly...

Do I Need ________ Insurance??

Image
Everyone has the standard home and auto insurance and it’s obvious why you need them. But why would someone need life, health, umbrella and other insurances like that? I’ll tell you why right here: Life Life insurance may be costly but has a lot of benefits. It pays for final expenses such as funeral and cremation costs. It can cover mortgage balance. If you have a family and pass away suddenly, life insurance can help replace some of your income to support the family. Having life insurance also allows you to leave your belongings with a family member or friend. Health If you are someone who likes daily check ups with doctors, dentists, etc. then health insurance is definitely for you. Even if you are one of those stubborn people who goes once every six years just because your wife is nagging you about it, there are still benefits to having health insurance. It covers trips to the emergency room, care before your baby is born, prescription pills or drugs, lab tests, menta...
